Permit to Cut Curb | Drainage Curb Cut
Do you need a permit to cut a street curb? A very common question asked by many who are considering running and discharging their drain lines at the street curb. The short answer is "yes" - you need a permit to cut the curb, or to do any other type of modification. This requirement also applies to cutting your sidewalk too. I mention the sidewalk because often when installing and running a drain line from a French drain, or gutter downspout to the street curb many will cut the sidewalk, rather than digging beneath it. It's important to note you do not own the sidewalk, or curb in front of your home. Therefore any modifications you make to it will require the cities approval.
The long answer to the question is...the permit requirements change from city to city. And some cities have other requirements other than a permit. Many cities will want a security bond in order for you to perform the work. The amount of this bond will vary from city to city. In some cities you will be required to install a inlet/outlet adaptor at the curb, which your drain line attaches too. The city of Fayetteville, AR. has this requirement and you must install the specific outlet, which they recommend, at the street curb for your drain. Other cities do not have this requirement.
Municipality's are concerned with the volume of water you are discharging from your drains into the city storm water drainage system. Another concern of any drainage system are the contaminants carried by the storm water run-off. For these reasons many cities have a "First Flush Rule". Check with your local city to see what, if any, steps you are to take with your drainage system before depositing water into the street.
Call your local City Works Department, or Engineering Department to learn all about code requirements for cutting a street curb.

Accessibility of drain lines beneath concrete should be taken into consideration when running, or placing, a drain line beneath a driveway or walkway. An important an easy drainage solution for running pipes beneath such hard-surfaces, is to place the pipe through a sleeve. Doing so, allows for easier access of the pipe for repair - or replacement - without the added expense of removing and rep...

Choosing the correct drainage pipe for your gutter downspout drain lines, or other drainage project, can be a daunting task. Not only do we require these drains to move thousands of gallons of water, but we also want and need them to remain clog free. Due to downspouts being an entry point for debris, clogging is a common cause for failure of downspout drains. However, this common failure can b...

I have no idea what the problem is? You show it during heavy rain, how long after the rain stops does the water go away? Does it sit in that swale? It seems to me the water running along the back of the yard is doing great, running away from the house to the drain. Erosion? How? The water is running over grass, that's great! You don't show the roof or where the roof water goes. I barely saw 1 downspout dumping on to a patio, how is the patio pitched? You might need solid pipes to get roof water away from the house to that drain basin. Where does the water go that was caught by the basin? Did you get the job? Please provide a link.

I'm confused as to what I should put in the trench with the pipe. Should I place rocks, fabric wrap, I mean it's not perforated so will weeds still get in there? I have 3 down spouts and I plan to put 3 basins. Two 9 inch basins on two of the downspouts and a 6 in basin along the path to the discharge/emitter.

I am planning to use PVC pipe as a french drain for gutter downspouts on a single wide mobile home. I must shoot the water outlet underneath the trailer due to the septic being in the front yard and a tight lot. I also planned to dig a pit, fill it with gravel for the catch basin? Will this work????

I've paid my son this way, and this year I hired a helper for the whole lawn season through a temp, I've never hired employees, because this seems like a good deal covering payroll taxes, social security and workman's comp. and no bookkeeping. The cost also works on my Schedule C expenses. I also send who I want to work for me to the temp co. for hiring. So, no surprises. I sought this video out to see how much I'm winning or losing using the temp co but really couldn't tell. The statements on the pro side are why I chose this way, and I haven't really run into any of the cons. I still just wonder about costs or savings going with the temp co. Thanks for posting the video.

Regarding not tying downspouts into a French drain: Would T-ing into the middle of a linear French drain ***with a pop-up emitter on either end*** to handle heavy rain events' surplus be reasonable? Said French drain run would be 15-20 feet from my house. This is on a flat city lot. Thanks much, great tips!

How does a property owner allow a tenant to trash his place without addressing it. The sheer amount of trash in the yard seems like it would take years to accumulate. If it were I, if I began to witness this, I'd give the tennants two months to clean it up (once discovered) and if there is no progress on their part- buh-bye.

Hi, good video, thanks. We asked a builder to install and connect french drains throughout our garden. He did that. We got flooded afterwards repeatedly (this is Scotland) and so I dug up part of what he supposedly connected but guess what? He left one entire length of French drain pipe buried in about 30mm deep soil, totally unconnected to anything at both sides. I asked him to connect it hence tie it in with the other french drains (the end pipe of one of the other french pipes (there are 5 of them) further along the way ties into our house downpipe rainwater drain). Rather than him tie in his 30mm deep useless piece of shallow open-ended French drain, he told me to buy roof gutters and down-pipes for my log cabin / garden shed and he would tie in the bottom of the down-pipes to the long piece of French drain that is open at either end. He said he would ties both new downpipes into those two open ends. The french drainage is the type that has slits all around it. Is this right or has he done a total number on me? Thanks. Love from Scotland, X.
